More than 600 bulls from Madurai, Trichy, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Sivaganga and from Dindigul districts will participate in Alanganallur jallikattu. In order to tame the bull, the bull fighters use techniques to hold on to the hump so that they can easily subdue the bull, but still it is tough and it requires adequate training.
The name Jallikattu is derived from two Tamil words Sallikasu (coins) and Kattu (bundle). The coins will be tied to the horns of bulls and the one who tames the bull will get that prize money bundle. Since the bull taming festival is to showcase the valor of the youth, many young men courageously will took part to tame the bull and in olden days it is a tradition of women to choose their bridegroom through this adventurous sport game. Likewise the bull owners will gave their daughters in marriage to the one who subdue their bulls.
Every year there will be attractive prizes for Jallikattu like motorcycles, gold and silver coins etc. This year the winner of 2014 Alanganallur Jallikattu (Bull of the match and Man of the match) will be rewarded with a motorcycle. Winner of 2014 Alanganallur Jallikattu
Total of 649 bulls from all over Tamil Nadu have been registered for Alanganallur Jallikattu. But only 595 bulls arrived at Alanganallur. Veterinary doctors conducted medical test for all these bulls and 7 bulls were rejected. So 588 bulls were approved for participation for Alanganallur Jallikattu.
Likewise out of 580 bull fighters, 516 tamers are approved to participate in Jallikattu after medical test. Prizes like gold coins, silver coins, cot, bicycle, vessels were offered for those who subdued the bull. They ended bull fighting by 2.10 pm and so only 552 bulls got participated. 49 were injured in alanganallur jallikattu and they were given medical treatment and 7 got hospitalized in Madurai Govt Hospital.
Vinothrajan from Veerapandi an Armed Reserve Policeman in Madurai has bagged the title Man of the Match for taming 18 bulls. He was announced as winner of Alanganallur Jallikattu and Madurai Collector Mr.Subramanian gifted him with motor cycle as the prize.
